IRI delegation meets with leaders of both parties of JPA

A three-member delegation from the US-based non-governmental organization International Republican Institute (IRI) held separate meetings with leaders of both factions of the Jatiya Party (JP). The meeting discussed democracy, electoral reforms and organizing free and fair elections. The two factions of the party informed the media about this in a separate press release. The first meeting was held with JP Chairman GM Quader on Thursday morning at a hotel in Banani in the capital. The party’s Secretary General Shamim Haider Patwary, Presidium member Mainur Rabbi Chowdhury and Chairman’s Advisor Mahfuzur Rahman were present at the time.

The IRI delegation at the meeting included Asia-Pacific Director Stephen Seema, Deputy Director Matthew Carter, and Senior Program Manager Amitabh Ghosh. The press release said that the meeting was held as part of constructive discussions on democracy and electoral reforms in Bangladesh.

Later, the IRI delegation met with the leaders of the faction led by Anisul Islam Mahmud and Ruhul Amin Howlader in Banani, the capital. The meeting, held at the residence of JPA Presidium member Mashrur Mawla, was attended by the party’s faction chairman Anisul Islam Mahmud, executive chairman Mujibul Haque and secretary general ABM Ruhul Amin Howlader.

A detailed exchange of views was held on the current political context of Bangladesh, necessary reforms and progress in organizing a free, fair and participatory national election, the press release said.
